  Databases:  Manipulating a database requires students to think outside the box. Students reach higher levels of thinking. as they work to:
1) Classify unique characteristics of the data;
2) Discover the distinctive qualities of the data to compare and contrast; and
3) Take that data and rank it in the order of importance.

Elementary-Have students create a database of the Presidents or their favorite books.

Middle- Have your students track the weather for two months in a city of their choice. Then using a query about the number of days the rainfall exceeded .10 inches, have students produce a report on all records that include
rainfall at that level.

High School-Students can conduct and administer their own surveys to others and collect the data in a spreadsheet. . From that spreadsheet students can create a database and then a form from which to search, update and enter records.

Technology Triumphs in Lee County Schools!

Orangewood Elementary Instructional Technologist, Rodney Winkler, works with students as they prepare the Photo Stories that they wrote. Each student was given a digital camera and asked to take five pictures that would tell a story.  In the computer lab they each created a storyboard to plan out what would go on each frame of their story. Using PhotoStory 3 software they were able to record their story by using their own voice reading their script. The stories are one of several projects that all of the 3rd thru 5th grade students  complete during their sessions in the technology lab.   The lessons combine National Educational Technology Standards with current curriculum standards. Last spring a group of students and the teachers were featured at Apple Computer at Coconut Point and shared their podcast with the community. They also instructed onlookers how to make a podcast. Students are also currently working on podcasts that will be shared with their partner schools in Europe through the National Children’s Public Radio in Berlin, Germany.

FCAT Explorer Night at Mariner High School

Parents gathered at Mariner High School on October the 2nd to learn all about the FCAT Explorer and how their own students can use it to increase their achievement levels in Math, Reading and Science. The presenter, Lynne Coris, was provided by funds from the Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant. Parents were able to ask questions about the FCAT and to experience the FCAT Explorer website as a student. Parents were encouraged to have students work just fifteen minutes a night on FCAT Explorer to really make a difference!
