Cypress Swamps

Another habitat dominated by freshwater is the cypress swamp.  These areas are usually found in low lying places such as basins and sloughs.  Here, surface water can accumulate before it slowly percolates into the aquifer.  Cypress trees dominate this habitat where water may submerge their trunks for 6-8 months.  Varied forms of aquatic plant life make their home here living off the abundant nutrients in the soil or finding what they need from the leaf litter.  Many of the plants are not visible during wet or dry periods depending on the plants' preference.  Animals too may select to frequent swamps in the dry season or the wet season.
