"Making Connections"
Earth Week, April 21 – 25, 2008

Resources, Materials, and Events from the
Environmental Education Program

 

Earth Week Speakers.  Community experts will present in classrooms during Earth Week.  Topics range from “Shopping Environmentally” to “Beach-a-Box” to “Environmental Reporting”.  Please note:  scheduling should be handled by the Environmental Education Faculty Representative from each school.  Click the links to view the menus for Elementary, Middle and High School.

School-wide Earth Day Project Ideas.  This one page hand-out includes suggestions for getting your school plans organized.  Click here to download the PDF.

Earth Day Quotes.  A variety of quotes from authors, poets, and scholars has been compiled for use on morning announcements and to inspire lesson plans.  Click here to download the six page collection.

Earth Day Facts.  A variety of facts and statistics on water, wildlife, recycling, energy and more have been compiled for use on morning announcements and to inspire or support lesson plans.  Click here to download the four page collection.

Connecting Values and Actions, Actions and Consequences.  This list of actions that students can take is designed to inspire children by providing actions they can take to benefit the environment.  Click here to download the list.

Creating the Future … Choices and Actions.  This two-page document lists actions that help create a positive future.  This list can be used for discussion, for personal inspiration, to encourage student discussion or as student writing and research topics.  Click here to download the list.

20% in 10 Days Challenge.  Staff members at school district work sites are encouraged to take part in this event to reduce the number of automobiles on the road, the amount of gasoline consumed, and the pounds of carbon added to the atmosphere.  Click here for more information.

Earth Week “LCPEC Trek”.   On Wednesday, April 23, school district staff members who live in Cape Coral and work in the Lee County Public Education Center on Colonial are invited to ride LeeTran and walk to work.  EE staff member and experienced Lee Tran rider, Cindy Bear will meet registered participants, provide O.J. and a breakfast snack then ride along to the Edison Mall terminus.  From the Edison Mall participants will walk 1.20 miles to LCPEC.  At the end of the day, it will all happen in reverse.  Pre-registration is required.  Click here to download additional information.

Campus CleanUp.  The Environmental Education Program will provide data forms, litter bags and tips for facilitating Litter Reduction Plans based on the data collected.  Registration is required by March 28, 2008.  Click here to download the flyer.

T-shirts.  There is not an organized Earth Day T-shirt event.  Instead, EE can provide information regarding a local business using organic cotton and natural dyes to schools interested in creating their own shirts.  Email cindylb@leeschools.net for more information.

Requested support and resources.  The EE program staff will field questions, help organize school events, and in any way possible support school based events.  Email cindylb@leeschools.net.

 

During Earth Week 2007:

  • 8,000 middle schools students participated in a reading event focusing on the Everglades
  • 2,000 students collected campus litter, categorized it and created litter reduction plans
  • 41 community experts presented programs in 47 schools reaching over 20,000 students
  • Dozens of trees were planted on school campuses
  • Students, teachers and staff members wore colors of the Earth
  • Earth cookies were baked, Earth poetry was read, gardens were planted and more.
