In support of the District mission to allow each student to reach his or her highest potential, the Curriculum Services Department establishes relevant and rigorous curriculum aligned to the Common Core and Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, and provides guidance and leadership in support of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and college and career readiness skills.

         11th Annual Whitaker Mathematics Competition

On Monday, December 16th, Florida Gulf Coast University hosted the 11th Annual Whitaker Mathematics Competition. This year over 1,200 students from 48 schools were in attendance, making this competition second only in size to the State Championships held in April.

The highlight of the competition are the full-paid scholarships to FGCU, which are awarded to the first place finishers in each category. This year, Josh Kennedy, from Fort Myers High, placed 1st in the Pre-Calculus Division, taking home the full scholarship.

Lee County had several other students place in the competition:

 - Ngan Nguyan from Cape Coral High - 3rd in Pre-Calculus
 - Luke Chin A Foeng from Riverdale High - 2nd in Geometry
 - Tyler Millis from Dunbar High - 2nd in Algebra 2
 - Andrew Davis from Cape Coral High - 3rd in Calculus
          Cape Coral High School Wins Award at Envirothon

Students from Ms. Kominar’s Environmental Club competed in the 2014 Southwest Florida Gulf Coast Environthon, finishing in second place. Environthon is an academic challenge for high school students that educates, creates partnerships, and promotes teamwork as students learn about the interdependencies of our environment. Fourteen high schools representing Charlotte, Collier, and Lee Counties participated in this year’s event. With the second place finish, the team from Cape High qualifies for the 2014 Florida Envirothon. Congratulations, Seahawks!
